چکیده
Cork boiling wastewater (CBW) is a highly polluted and difficult to treat effluent resultant from the cork manufacturing industry. This study aims evaluate new, reliable, efficient, sustainable process this effluent. paper tested electrocoagulation as pre- post-treatment improve already existing physicochemical treatment in production facility Portugal. In procedures (PC), addition of different volumes coagulant (ferric chloride (III) 40% w/w), neutralizer (sodium hydroxide, 32% flocculant (polyacrylamide, 0.2 g/L) were evaluated. Electrocoagulation (EC) was performed bench-scale reactor, using aluminum stainless-steel electrodes. For EC, initial pH, current density, tension values tested. When used post-treatment, better performances achieved. However, costs increased significantly. Coagulation/flocculation offers viable cheap treatment, achieving removal efficiencies 88.2%, 81.0%, 76.9%, 94.2% for total chemical oxygen demand (tCOD), carbon (TC), nitrogen (TN), soluble (sCOD), respectively. With PC-EC combination, it possible achieve 92.4%, 88.0%, 91.4%, 91.4% tCOD, TC, TN, sCOD, The TN efficiency can translate into great benefits certain discharge conditions should be taken consideration improving sustainability On other hand, when EC pre-treatment, there are no either terms performance or operating costs.

Treatment of cork boiling wastewater using chemical oxidation and biodegradation.
Three cultures were enriched from cork boiling wastewater using tannic acid as the selective carbon substrate, at 25 degrees C and pH 7.2, 25 degrees C and pH 4.7 and 50 degrees C and pH 4.7. The enrichment culture obtained at neutral pH was composed of five culturable isolates, whereas from each acidic enrichment two bacterial strains were isolated. Mesophilic isolates were Gram negative bacte...
متن کاملSlaughterhouse Wastewater Treatment by Combined Chemical Coagulation and Electrocoagulation Process
Slaughterhouse wastewater contains various and high amounts of organic matter (e.g., proteins, blood, fat and lard). In order to produce an effluent suitable for stream discharge, chemical coagulation and electrocoagulation techniques have been particularly explored at the laboratory pilot scale for organic compounds removal from slaughterhouse effluent. The purpose of this work was to investig...
متن کاملElectrocoagulation as a Wastewater Treatment
Coagulation and flocculation are traditional methods for the treatment of polluted water. Electrocoagulation presents a robust novel and innovative alternative in which a sacrificial metal anode doses water electrochemically. This has the major advantage of providing active cations required for coagulation, without increasing the salinity of the water. Electrocoagulation is a complex process wi...
متن کاملTreatment of wastewater by electrocoagulation: a review.
The electrocoagulation (EC) process is an electrochemical means of introducing coagulants and removing suspended solids, colloidal material, and metals, as well as other dissolved solids from water and wastewaters. The EC process has been successfully employed in removing pollutants, pesticides, and radionuclides. This process also removes harmful microorganisms. More often during EC operation,...
متن کاملAutomated Electrocoagulation System for Wastewater Treatment
There are two major ways to treat wastewater; it is either through chemical or non-chemical treatment. Both improve water quality, but do not make water safe for domestic use. Most firms or companies use coagulation treatment or chemical treatment. But the problem for this treatment is the selection of the best chemical to be used; it is expensive and frequent dosage adjustments are required to...
